It's the last day of January and Sunday's Six of the Best again. That means I get to share another 6 paragraphs from one of my books.  Yay!

My submission for this week is from my 4th book, A Dom's Dilemma, a BDSM/spanking novel that is sometimes playful, sometimes serious and sometimes terrifying, published by Blushing Books.  Kelly and Jim, the two main characters, were secondary characters in Arrested by Love.  Though this story stands on its own, if you read Arrested by Love, you'll most likely recognize some of the scenes, since we see a little bit of Kyle and Tiffany in this book, too.

In this excerpt, near the end of Chapter Five, Jim Evans and Kelly Franklin are together at "The Velvet Chains," a BDSM club where they met that evening.  Kelly is receiving some aftercare after a session of intensive medical play she did with Jim that seemed a lot more real than play.  Aftercare is an important part of the BDSM experience.  Both the Dom and the sub seek reassurance from the other.  Jim enjoys holding Kelly, and she likes being in his arms, so this is a quiet period of reflection and getting to know each other. Problem is, when Jim asks Kelly a question she really doesn't want to answer, her evasion serves as an admission she's lied to him.

Normally, a Dom would punish a sub for that infraction, but Jim has told Kelly he'll give her a onetime pass. Before they do anything else, however, he suggests they get to know each other a little better.  He begins by asking her some pertinent questions, which eventually lead to the topic of trust.  When Kelly admits that she probably trusts him more not to hurt her than anyone else, he's pleased, but remains cautious.  He informs her, in no uncertain terms, that he can be a controlling SOB who expects a lot, but he gives back in return.  If she chooses to remain as his sub, he'll expect her to be open and honest with about everything in her life. Even those things she might not want to share, but for the moment he's content to simply know more about her life until she admits she's still sore. Jim promptly takes her to task for not telling him earlier.

             He doubted her face could have looked more dismayed.  "Would I have to go back to the medical station, Sir?" she asked, her voice soft and uncertain even as her nose wrinkled with obvious distaste.  He gave the offending member a firm tap.

            "You have to do whatever I say.  It's as simple as that, sub."

            "Yes, Sir," she replied, laying her head against his chest and watching him warily.

            "Better."  He gave her an approving nod.  "Now, as it happens, I think I've got everything I'll need in my pocket already.  The lighting here is far from ideal, but if you want to risk it, I can examine you through feel and reaction.  Fair warnin' though, doin' that will probably make my inspection more painful."

            "May I stay seated on your lap and keep my blanket on, Sir?"

            Jim started to shake his head, then reconsidered.  "You goin' shy on me, Kelly girl?"

Kelly knows she makes a lousy sub.  She has a temper and a mouth that constantly get her into trouble, but she sees something in Jim that makes her want more of the type of mastering only he could give her, except she's not sure she can give him all the honesty he expects in return.

            Closing her eyes, she let out a soft groan.  "How, Sir?"

            "How what?  How would I examine you, or how would I treat you?"

            "Both, Sir."

            "The exam could be visual only.  Treatment would be application of an ointment inside and out."

Welcome to Sunday's Six of the Best Blog Hop, where we share six paragraphs from a published novel or a work in progress.  My stories are all M/f with the dominant male determined to protect the woman he cares for and loves, or grows to love, by doing whatever it takes to ensure her safety and continued health.

This week's excerpt is a sneak peek from my fourth spanking romance, A Simple Misunderstanding, which is the seventh book in the Corbin's Bend series.  I hope you enjoy it.

In this scene, which occurs near the beginning, Eleanor Benson (Elly) has some exciting news she wants to share with Gerald Douglas (Jerry).  She's seen Jerry in the dog park on an almost daily basis since she and her husband moved into Corbin's Bend, but only started opening up to him a few days ago.  As the Corbin's Bend vet, Jerry has expressed an interest in Elly's dog, Muffin.  His calm, steady manner soothes Elly's wounded spirit, and the fact his observant eyes seem to notice more about her than she'd like both attracts and frightens her.  

All the same, he's the first person she thinks of when she has news to share.  So, she heads over to the dog park with her toy poodle, Muffin, in the hope he'll meet her there.  He does.  Excited, she tells him she had three women visit her that morning.  Wanting to hear more, Jerry starts asking questions until he discovers Elly risked suffering her husband's fury if he discovered she'd come to the dog park without his permission first. Frightened for her, Jerry gives her a swat for putting herself at risk, then immediately apologizes as he admits that he worries about her. Surprised, Elly tells him he doesn't need to worry. Arthur loves her, but as she rushes home she fears her strict, unyielding husband may take exception to her tardiness. Calling him, she realizes just how right she was when he asks if she found chatting with their neighbors more important than keeping her word to her husband.

Elly’s heart sank to her feet. No matter how she replied to the question, she’d be punished for the wrong answer. “I’m sorry.”

“Yes, I’m sure you are, but that doesn’t address the issue, does it?”

“No, sir.”

“Your perpetual tardiness is yet another sign of your inability to manage your time properly. I thought I’d made it clear during our previous sessions that timeliness and tidiness are signs of respect, and to ignore either reflects a blatant disrespect to me.”

“I didn’t want to be rude….”

“But you were. To me. I am not pleased, Eleanor. However, you knew I wouldn’t be when you made your choice, didn’t you?”

 

Arthur has given Elly rules he expects her to follow. Disobedience results in punishment no matter the excuse.

Elly’s fingers trembled as she fumbled to push her door key into its lock, but not because of the cold. After she’d hurriedly unfastened the lead from Muffin’s harness, she rushed over to the phone and dialed her husband’s work number.

“You’re ten minutes late, Eleanor,” he replied without even a pretense of cordiality.

“Yes, I know. I’m sorry.”

“So, what’s your excuse for tardiness this time? Weather, improper footwear, or that rat of a dog you own?”

Elly hesitated, unsure if the truth would only make matters worse. “Dr. Douglas, the vet, wished to speak with me, and I didn’t want to appear rude by cutting him off.”

“I see. So, is it more important for you to chat with our neighbors than keep your word to your husband?”

            "Nothing exciting, I assure you.  I schedule my boss's meetings, take phone messages for him, do his filing….  Pretty much anything a company executive requires."

            "And does your boss require you to fulfill any duties more personal in nature?"

            Surprised he'd even ask her that question, Kelly smacked him on the shoulder without thinking.  "Hey, what do you think I am?"
