Guest Post - 9/15/15 - "Effie - The Marriage Market Book 3 by Stevie MacFarlane

Today, Stevie MacFarlane has dropped by to share information about her newest release "Effie: The Marriage Market" Book three, the latest in her Marriage Market book series.

Excerpt:

Throwing back the covers, Effie jumped off the bed and poked her finger in his chest.
The white shirt she wore dangled over her hands and down past her knees. Shoving up the sleeves she held her ground when he stood to face her.
"Amelia did not ask us to rescue her," she hissed, tipping her head back to make eye contact. "She simply informed us of her dire situation. It was Grace and I who decided to come to Seattle and bring her home to Massachusetts. Horace Remington added fuel to the fire when he physically abused Grace while trying to force her into marriage, but we would have come anyway."
"How did you meet Jonah?" Sam asked.
"He was the Pinkerton agent hired to find Grace," Effie continued, shoving her wildly curling blonde hair over her shoulder. "Horace added five thousand dollars to the normal fee for Grace's return as an incentive, but as you can see, we made it here just fine."
"Hardly that, Miss Lane," he replied crisply. "You all but invaded my parents' home, threatened me with a pistol, managed to destroy a valuable family heirloom and got your fanny blistered for it. Then you insisted on returning to your hotel where you promptly shot a man."
"He was trying to kill me," Grace retorted. "It was self-defense."
"I happen to believe you, Miss Lane. Let's hope the Marshal agrees. In any case, you made the trip and put both you and Grace at great risk and all for nothing."
"It wasn't for nothing. We will see for ourselves if Amelia is happy and well-cared for. Grace has fallen in love and married Jonah Blackthorn and I've had a grand adventure."
"One that almost got you killed," he snorted angrily.
"Despite your beliefs, Mr. Jordon, women in the east are not hot house flowers. We are independent, self-sufficient and quite capable of taking care of our own affairs. I have no doubt Amelia would have managed even if your brother had turned out to be the scoundrel she believed him to be."
"Then why did you come?" he asked incredulously.
"Because I wanted to, and because she is like a sister to me, as is Grace," she informed him coolly.
"Well, now that you're assured of both Amelia's and Grace's wellbeing, I hope you will feel free to make a hasty departure, Miss Lane," he growled. "That is, of course, providing you don't find your sweet ass sitting in jail."
"I shall do as I please, Mr. Jordon. I doubt even a backward Marshal will arrest me for defending myself. I'm sure that will be a disappointment to you," she sighed, sadly shaking her head.

Blurb:

Euphemia Lane had a feeling from the get go that Samuel Jordon was going to give her trouble. In his rude letter, he threatened to spank and disarm her should she show up in Seattle with her pistols. However, his warning doesn’t deter Effie from her mission. Come hell or high water, she and Grace are determined to travel to Seattle to rescue their friend, Amelia. How was she to know that Amelia’s letter was a huge mistake or that Horace Remington would follow them and nearly kill her? And there was no way she could have anticipated what would happen once she and Grace arrive at the Jordon home.

Never would she have imagined that she would receive her very first spanking at the hands of her nemesis. It was galling to say the least, and to top it all off, he relieved her of her pistols after she destroyed a treasured family heirloom and shot Horace. Now she is in Sam’s protective custody until the Marshal determines she had acted in self-defense. The problem seems to be: who is going to protect her from Sam?

Samuel Jordon is so angry when Marshal Cole Hadley sticks him with Miss Lane that he sees stars. In his opinion, she is a sassy-mouthed witch hiding in a sweet little body. His determination to be firm yet detached lasts all of two days. Who knew one little drop of frosting on one luscious lip would change his life forever? What kind of young woman can turn a well-balanced, confirmed bachelor into a perverted fiend who can't keep his hands off her?

Guest Post - 7/21/15 - Grace: The Marriage Market, Book Two by Stevie MacFarlane #HistoricalRomance #CivilWar #Western

Today I have Stevie MacFarlane visiting to share an excerpt from her second book in the Marriage Market series, Grace. I asked what advice she'd give to writers who decided to try their hand at erotica. This is what she said:

If you want to write erotica, you have to be ready to step outside your comfort zone at times.  I began with baby steps, but I’m getting braver all the time.  Sit down and write.  Anything can be edited and tweaked until you’re comfortable with it.

So true, but I have one other thing to add. Be careful not to write your story simply to make money. Just because other authors are writing scenes that make you uncomfortable, that doesn't mean you need to do the same. This market is large enough to support all different styles. Yes, step out of your comfort zone, but be sure to write about characters and events that personally appeal to you. If you don't like your story and characters, don't expect anyone else to fall in love with them. Now on to Grace.

Excerpt:

“While I was aboard the Mystic Maiden, I wrote to Effie and Grace,” Amelia said avoiding his eyes.  “I told them terrible things about you.”
“What kind of things?” Hugh demanded, crossing his arms over his chest.
“Things I believed true at the time,” she softly replied.  “I said I’d been deceived and you were a scoundrel who proposed to scores of other women.  My intention was to divorce you immediately and possibly take a job until I earned enough to pay my passage home.”
“Scores?  I see. And did you write to them once you realized it had all been a mistake.  That I was not guilty of these sins?”
“No,” she whispered, looking at the floor.
      “Why not?”
“I just forgot.  Everything happened so fast, and then you brought me here and well…”
“And you had other things to think about, is that it?” he asked.
“Yes, well Hugh we’ve hardly left the house,” she insisted, blushing wildly.  “I completely forgot I asked Alice to mail those letters.”
“So, should I expect an irate father at my door, demanding justice?  Or perhaps Miss Lane will arrive to defend your honor with her pistol.”
“How do you know about Effie and her pistols?” Amelia gasped.
“She sent me a picture of her holding a rather large firearm, along with a letter of thinly veiled threats.”
      “She didn’t?”
“Yes, my love, she did.  It arrived while we were in San Francisco and Sam opened it.”
“Oh no,” Amelia groaned, a hand to her cheek.
“Are all of your friends prone to violence?”
“Effie isn’t prone to violence.  She’s just very protective of those she cares about.  Did Sam write back to her?”
“Yes he did, and he invited her to come to Seattle to see for herself that you were being well cared for.  He also informed her that should she arrive with a pistol in hand she should be prepared for some old fashioned discipline,” he said, resting his hip on the desk.
“That may have been a mistake,” Amelia said, rounding the desk and pacing in front of it.
After several trips back and forth Hugh snagged her wrist and pulled her into his arms.
“Is your friend so fearsome then?” he teased.
“Not fearsome, but fearless.  Effie doesn’t care for being bossed around.  She may have taken his letter as a challenge.”  Looking up at her husband’s face it was clear to Amelia he wasn’t taking it very seriously and that worried her.  “I need to write the letters immediately,” she said, pulling away from him.
“By all means get to work,” Hugh agreed, patting her bottom firmly.  “It seems my life may be at risk.”
“This isn’t funny,” she insisted primly, pulling her robe closed as his eyes traveled over her naked body.
“No it certainly isn’t,” he agreed.  “It will be even less so if Miss Lane shows up and Samuel finds himself at the end of a gun barrel.  If that happens I don’t think Miss Lane will be the only one on the receiving end of a damn good spanking.”
      “You don’t?”
“I’m certain of it,” he promised with his eyes full of warning.
      “Oh…well I better get busy.”
“You do that and while you’re at it don’t forget to mention I’m not an ogre,” he suggested as he moved to the doorway.
“No, I won’t.  I’ll tell them you’re a wonderful husband…even if you do spank me,” she finished with a whisper as she took up her pen.
Hugh smiled, watching her dark hair spill onto the desk as she wrote furiously.
      “And Amelia…”
      “Yes.”
“You might mention that you particularly enjoy the marriage bed,” he offered as he walked away laughing.
      “Hugh!”

Blurb:

Grace Wentworth and Effie Lane were cautiously optimistic when their dear friend Amelia decided to travel west to become the bride of a man she'd never met. Despite their misgivings they were stunned when Amelia wrote informing them she'd made a dreadful mistake in marrying Mr. Jordon.
Determined to rescue her dear friend from the clutches of a scoundrel, Effie made plans to leave for Seattle immediately. Grace would follow when she could get away from the ever watchful eye of her mother. Everything changed when Grace was forced to accept the proposal of a cruel and violent man. Suddenly her mother's wrath could not compare with what she would face as Horace Remington’s wife. Throwing all caution aside, she fled with Effie even knowing her mother would most likely hire a Pinkerton man to find her. However, she never expected to fall for him as they played a game of cat and mouse from Chicago to Seattle.
For Jonah Blackthorn, apprehending a runaway socialite seemed like an easy assignment. Locating two young, inexperienced women would take him no time at all and the five thousand dollar reward offered by the frantic fiancé would go a long way as Jonah had plans to leave the agency to begin a new chapter in his life.
What he didn't plan on was being outwitted by the brats or the fact that Effie Lane wasn't relying on her wits alone to get them safely to Seattle. He also didn't expect to come to care for the redhead traveling with her gun-toting friend. When he finally caught up with them he was going to give Grace the spanking of a life time or kiss her senseless. Maybe both.

Guest Post - 5/25/15 - "MacDermont's Bride" by Stevie MacFarlane and Keriann McKenna #Western #Spanking

Excerpt:

Annie rummaged through her suitcase for something to wear and nothing matched, but she did the best she could with what he had thrown into it.  She had just finished making the last piece of French toast when he ambled into the kitchen, rubbing his eyes and then stretching in an attempt to wake up.
“It smells good in here,” he said as she served him coffee and then set a plate of French toast and sausage in front of him.
“I hope you like it,” she replied as she started to eat.
“Mmm, I do like it, thank you.  Annie we need to discuss a few things and now is as good a time as any.”  In spite of her puzzled look, between bites he laid out all the problems Chuck had mentioned.  Then he added that her car might not be fixed until the middle of the week and he would have Duncan take her to and from work.
“Mac, first of all I don’t want to be an imposition and second, I can’t afford to have all that work done to my house,” she told him in no uncertain terms.  She knew full well he already knew her husband’s illness had run her so far into debt her credit rating might never be above 500 again.
“Darlin’, I’m not expecting you to be able to afford the work.  You agreed that you would try your best, and letting me take care of those things is part of it.  And, by the way, I don’t ever want you to feel as though you are an imposition on me or any of my staff.
“Work with me on this will you please?”
“Okay,” Annie said and continued eating.
“Okay?  Just like that?  No arguments?”
“You’ll get no arguments from me.  Mac, I’m practicing.  Submitting is not easy for me; how am I doing so far?”
“You’re doing great.  I love it,” Mac smiled at her.
“Oh, it’s not easy.  I have a mouth full of things I want to say, not to mention the small piece of sausage that just landed on your plate while I was trying to talk and eat at the same time, but to please you; I’m keeping them to myself.”
“That works for me,” Mac said as he laughed out loud.  “Now, can we discuss something more serious?”
“Yes we can, we can discuss anything that’s on your mind.”
Here goes nothing, Mac thought as he began to speak.  “Darlin’, after what happened the other night, I can’t bring myself to allow you to live in that neighborhood.  You’re just not safe there.  I want you to consider moving in with me.  I’m not rushing you, I want you to take your time and seriously think about it.  You can give me your decision whenever you’re ready.”  There, he said it and she just kept eating as though he’d spoken about the weather.
“Okay, what’s the next topic?” Annie munched on another link of sausage.
Shocked beyond belief, Mac just looked at her.  “Hmmm, that’s all I have, I guess,” he said, wondering just who this woman had become and overnight at that.
“Well,” Annie said as she stood and started to pick up the dishes.  “I have a few things I’d like to discuss.”
Ah, the Annie he knew was back.  “I’m listening.”
As she loaded the dishwasher, she turned to him.  “Will you please take me home…”
“Absolutely not!” Mac stated emphatically.
“Hey, just a minute; I didn’t interrupt you when you were talking,” she scolded.  “I was trying to ask you if you would please take me home so I could get my clothes for work.  Nothing you threw in my suitcase matches and I can’t show up at work in shorts or jeans.”
“I’m sorry I interrupted you.  Yes, we can run into town this afternoon if you want.” Mac felt guilty for incorrectly anticipating what she was going to say.  “You said a few things, please go on.  I won’t interrupt you again.”
Annie thought about the metaphor Elise had used when she told her men were just like horses.  Opening the freezer, she took stock of the contents.  “What do you want for dinner?  The choices are pork chops or chicken.”
Still in shock, Mac answered.  “Either is fine with me.  I’d be happy to grill some chicken.”
“Sounds good, chicken it is.  Now, with your permission, I’d like to help Elise in the stables again.  Do you have any objection?”
“Annie, that’s a very thoughtful idea.  Now that she’s pregnant, I’m sure she would love the help and the company too.”
“Anything else you want to discuss?”  Mac was waiting for the other shoe to drop.
“Yes, just another couple of things,” she said as she put the chicken in the fridge hoping it would defrost in time.  “I’d like to stop at the liquor store and pick up a couple of bottles of white zinfandel.  Red wine gives me such a headache.  I’d also like a bottle of Frangelico; I noticed there wasn’t any in the liquor cabinet and I really enjoyed it.”
“No problem, we can do that when we go into town,” Mac grinned, liking what he saw.
“Thank you, Sweetheart,” Annie said as she planted a very tender kiss on his lips.
“I think I’ll shower after the stables if that’s okay with you,” Annie added, pulling away from his mouth.
Mac smiled as he sat there sipping a second cup of coffee.  Maybe my Dad was right; a sound spanking worked wonders.

Blurb:

As Mac falls deeper in love with Annie, his past haunts him.  He failed to keep the woman he loved safe before and he vowed he’d never fail again.
Annie’s fierce independent streak doesn't make it easy for him.  She's created a life for herself, certain she can make it on her own.

About Keriann McKenna:

Hi Readers, I hope you enjoyed this excerpt, and if you read MacDermot’s Bride, I'd love for you to leave a review.  Reviews mean a great deal to authors and even those that are critical help us to write better books.
I’ve been writing for most of my life. My first love was music and lyrics and my first song was a dreadfully simple little tune about a boy I was madly in love with at fourteen. I’m certain I drove my grandmother to distraction as I wailed this boy’s name from the piano in the living room at every opportunity...romance was in my heart even at a young age.
Later in life I developed my craft as a poet and published work in anthologies. I still write poetry, but am dipping my toes in the waters of romance, both sweet and steamy.
I was born in a small community in Upstate New York, but left as soon as I bought a decent car that didn’t require more oil than gas...I’m not kidding. I used to pull into a service station, hand the attendant five bucks for gas and tell him to fill it up with drain oil.
I lived in Canada and the Midwest for several years before settling in the Seattle area with the love of my life. I now live in the foothills of the beautiful Rocky Mountains near my family; I’m retired from the counseling field although I still work crisis intervention two nights a week. I consult with and edit for other authors into the wee hours of the night, and I rescue senior dogs and give them a forever home.

Guest Post - 4/14/15 - Callie Mae and the Marine by Stevie MacFarlane #Romance #Western #TimeTravel

Today I'm pleased as punch to have Stevie MacFarlane back to talk about her release "Callie Mae and the Marine."  Before we get to the story, I asked Stevie if she'd be willing to share a funny real life incident with us, and this is what she told me....

Once when Bill was working on a car, I wanted to help.  He was changing the screen in a transmission.  We were lying under the car and holding up this cover thing while he took out the bolts and when he got to the last bolt he said, “You got it?”
“Yeah, I got it.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yeah, I got it!”
As soon as he took out the last bolt the whole thing tipped, covering his head and face in oil.  Really, it was much heavier than I thought and it just sort of sloshed to one side.
I couldn’t get out from under that car fast enough, lol.

We all try to be helpmates, but sometimes our assistance just isn't appreciated.  Sigh.

Excerpt:

“Who appointed you my boss anyway?  You’re not my father, my husband or my brother.  You haven’t even declared your intentions of courting me, and if that’s what you think you’re doing, you’re doing a dreadful job of it.   If you want to run things around here, why don’t you run for Marshal or something and leave me alone!”
“Maybe I will run for Marshal,” he shouted, losing his temper.  “But I won’t leave you alone in any case.  I’m still waiting to give you that spanking you so richly deserve for your stubborn, pigheaded attitude.  Maybe that will take the blinders off you and make you see reason.”
“Well you’ll be waiting a very long time, Mr. Whittaker,” she hissed as she kicked him smartly in the shin.  “I have no intention of giving you anything remotely resembling an ‘available opportunity’.  As a matter of fact if you come into my establishment again, it better be as a paying customer, or you’ll be out on your ear,” she promised, giving him another kick and twisting out of his arms.
Morgan watched her run to catch up with the others, as he bent to rub his leg.  He was fuming mad and it was all he could do not to chase after her, throw her over his shoulder and tote her out to the barn.  The little brat should run into the house and kiss his mothers, um…Emma’s…well she should be damned grateful that he wouldn’t embarrass Emma like that.  As far as Callie Mae went, protocol had just fallen by the wayside.  He had an itch to feel flesh on flesh and he intended to see 19th century panties up close and personal.  Sooner or later her luck would run out and then she’d be a sorry little girl, he promised himself as he stomped to the house, favoring his left leg.  He didn’t care what etiquette said, he was spanking her bare ass and spanking it good.
That letter from Cara couldn’t come soon enough.  He’d have a time frame to work with and if he had to leave, so be it, but he wasn’t leaving this lifetime without giving Miss Callie Mae Walker something to remember him by.
Morgan let the screen door snap closed behind him and hobbled to a chair.
“Where are the others?” Emma asked, watching him closely. “What’s wrong with your leg?”
“I ran into the toe of a shoe,” Morgan replied, rubbing his shin.
“Oh, I see,” Emma, said hiding her grin. “Was it attached to any foot in particular?”
“I’m pretty sure you know exactly whose foot it was, Ma.”
“Well, Callie Mae has always been a bit feisty, son. Sometimes you have to take the good with the bad,” she advised.
“At this particular moment, I’m having a hard time recalling the good,” Morgan sighed.

Blurb:

After he is wounded during his final tour of duty with the Marines, Morgan Whittaker returns home to a life in shambles. Knowing that their marriage is beyond repair, his wife uses her connections as a scientist at a top-secret government lab to offer Morgan an opportunity to start over in not only a new place, but a new time as well. Believing that he has nothing to lose, Morgan agrees, and soon enough he finds himself walking the dusty streets of a small Kansas town in the year 1880.

It is there that Morgan meets Miss Callie Mae Walker, the feisty preacher’s daughter who has taken it upon herself to run the local saloon, much to the consternation of her father and the townsfolk. Callie Mae is beautiful, sassy, and in desperate need of a firm hand applied to her bare bottom. Morgan decides that he might just be the man for the job, and before long he takes the little hellcat over his knee for a sound spanking.

Callie Mae is not one to be tamed easily, and his chastisement provokes her to take ever greater risks with her safety at the saloon. But Morgan is no longer the all-but-broken shell of a man he left behind in the twenty-first century. In this time and place, he is the tough, bold fighting man he once was, and he’ll be damned if the girl he loves is going to get herself killed because she didn’t have her backside heated properly.

Publisher’s Note: Callie Mae and the Marine is an erotic romance novel that contains spankings, sexual scenes, and more. If such material offends you, please don’t buy this book. Also note that this book was previously published under the title In This Lifetime: Morgan’s Journey.
