My submission for this week is an excerpt from my new spanking novella in the Corbin's Bend series, Past Interference, the sequel to A Simple Misunderstanding.  It used to be available only as part of the Love in the Rockies anthology, but is now being sold as a single release.

In this scene, which occurs in Chapter Six, Eleanor Benson (Elly) has made more than a few misjudgments, one of which results in her throat being injured when she experiences another run in with her ex-husband.  After she's been cleared by the doctor to talk, Jerry offers to call off from work then get them both a couple of drinks so they can discuss things through undisturbed. Elly thinks that's a good idea until Jerry admits he broached the topic of her uncertainties with their doctor and was given the advice that showing was better than telling. His words cause Elly more than a little unease. Having already made one serious mistake by marrying her first husband, she fears the consequences of making another.

Jerry’s appearance in Elly's life was close to a miracle. He was unstinting in his affection, patient and incredibly gentle. A part of her understood she was being ridiculous. Jerry would never purposefully hurt her in any way, but he was still a dominant male with certain expectations, and marriage was a sacred covenant. He might not intend to treat her any differently after they wed, but that didn’t mean he wouldn’t.

“What are you thinking?”

“I’m wondering why you’re so insistent I promise to obey you in church when you don’t think it will make any difference in our relationship.”

“I didn’t say it wouldn’t make any difference, I merely said that since you’re already obeying me, it should make very little difference to you.”

“So, why don’t we simply drop the word? It could save us a lot of time and grief.”

“You want to know why I think eliminating ‘obey’ from your vows would be a mistake?”

She nodded.

“Because it’s not the word itself that’s causing your hesitancy, Elly. It’s your trust. I could agree and let you change your vows to ease your mind, but that would merely be placing a bandage on the problem, rather than rooting out its cause.”

 

Elly is grasping at straws. Though her rational mind tells her Jerry would never turn into the monster her husband became on their wedding night, the scared little girl hiding inside her fears promising obedience will only end with a second struggle for freedom against the suffocating pressure of another man's thumb.

Elly frowned. “What does that mean — exactly?”

“It means that until I prove to you how Arthur and I differ, you’ll continue to fear the unknown.”

“You’ve already demonstrated your differences.”

“Not in the way that clearly matters to you.”

She shifted a little on the couch. “I don’t think I understand.”

“I think you do, but why don’t you tell me what scares you the most about giving me your vow of obedience?”

She shrugged and took another sip of tea.

“Are you afraid I’ll abuse your trust in some way by asking you to do something you don’t want to do?”

Uncomfortable with the direction this conversation was taking, Elly briefly considered redirecting the discussion to a safer topic, then bit her lip and answered honestly. “A little, I guess. I’m afraid you’ll use my promise to convince me to try something I don’t want to do.”

“Like what?”

 

Aware that Jerry and Marcus were friends, Elly is still uneasy over the fact that Jerry discussed her issues with the doctor treating her.

Given Colorado’s climate in February, Elly grew easily chilled, so Jerry fixed her a mug of Earl Grey tea and poured himself a cup of coffee, then sat beside her.

“Marcus said tea and honey would help soothe your throat.”

“Is that what you talked about? My throat?” she asked, bringing the steaming, aromatic fluid up to her nose and inhaling the unique citrusy fragrance deeply.

“We discussed the ways I could make you more comfortable. I wanted his take on your fear and what I could do to assuage it.”

She jerked her head up to stare at him. “You told him I asked to remove the word ‘obey’ from my wedding vows?”

Sitting back, he took a swallow of his coffee. “Not exactly. I mentioned how the changes that occurred in Arthur after you’d married him had left you uneasy and uncertain about marrying me, and asked if he had any recommendations.”

“What did he say?”

“That showing was better than talking.”

#WIPitUP - 8/10/16 - Past Interference - Elly is cranky #DD #CorbinsBend

WIP: Work in progress.  WIP it up Wednesday is a hop where writers share portions of the project they're working on with readers.  I really like the idea because it allows me to share something that's still in the creative stage as well as work behind the scenes as a prompt to keep me writing.

My current WIP is temporarily stalled, so today, I'm sharing an excerpt from my spanking novella in the Corbin's Bend series, Past Interference. Written as a sequel to A Simple Misunderstanding, Past Interference was originally part of the Corbin's Bend Valentine's Day collection "Love in the Rockies," but is now being sold separately.

What she needed was the opposite of what she wanted.

In this scene, which occurs near the beginning of Chapter Four, Eleanor Benson (Elly) is home from the hospital after nearly being choked to death by her ex-husband. Her throat is bruised, so she's forbidden to speak until her doctor gives the okay. However, letting a call from your best friend go to voice mail when you're bored out of your mind is criminal. Isn't it?  Unfortunately, when Jerry catches her talking, he makes it clear he doesn't agree. Since Elly was just released from the hospital, Jerry escorts her into the guest bedroom, places a chair in the corner and orders her to sit down and put her nose to the wall, giving her fifteen minutes corner time. Suggesting she think about what she did that earned this punishment, he informs her she'll be doing lines later to drive the point home. After corner time comes "the discussion."

“Okay.” Jerry’s warm hands settled on her shoulder. “You may straighten.” He helped position her against the chair back, but the resulting groan from her shift in posture earned her no sympathy whatsoever. It did gain her a Poodle on her thighs and a partial back rub, however, after he’d handed over her board and marker.

“What did you learn?” he asked, giving the board a tap before his strong fingers traversed along her aching spine.

“Not to piss you off,” Elly wrote back.

His stroking stilled. “Attitude can earn you a trip over my knee as easily as disobedience, you know?”

Erase. “Sorry. Feeling cranky.”

“Okay. Up.”

Lifting Muffin under one arm, Elly obeyed without comment, but when Jerry moved the chair closer to the center of the room and took her place, she winced. “Put Muffin down, and come here,” he ordered, patting his knee.

When she gave him a pleading look, he shook his head. “Sit.”

Grateful for another reprieve, she placed Muffin on the bed, gave her the signal to stay, then gingerly moved into position on his lap and curled up so her head rested beneath his chin. Admittedly, it was one of her favorite positions.

 

Knowing she's been caught disregarding doctor's orders and disobeying Jerry causes a sick feeling to roil in the pit of Elly's stomach, but she also doesn't feel what she did was all that egregious. Not really.

In this scene, which occurs in Chapter Five, Eleanor Benson (Elly) has made more than a few mistakes, one of which results in her throat being injured when she experiences another run in with her ex-husband.  Not permitted to talk until the doctor gives her permission, Elly is reduced to communicating with a white board.  With her wedding to Jerry scheduled to take place in three days, Elly refuses to spend one more night in the guest bedroom.

Knowing Jerry will do nothing to address their issues until after she's been cleared by their physician, Elly decides to confront the matter the only way she knows how.  Head on. Jerry gives Elly a chance to avoid the inevitable by ordering her to pick up her board one last time, but she stubbornly refuses to comply, so he makes good on his promise. When she finally gives in, Jerry wants to make sure she understands he's serious about her health, and that further disobedience will only get her in worse trouble. So, after he finishes administering her spanking, he tells her she deliberately sought to make him angry and she succeeded, so without further ado he grabs her arm and orders her to follow him to the corner where he places both hands on her head and orders her nose to the wall. However, when Elly appears more distressed than usual by his discipline, Jerry does what he can to reassure her.

Elly’s tears stopped flowing as she nestled her head against his chest and took comfort from his presence. When her gasps were reduced to small hitches, he gently pushed her back a few inches and ran a thumb beneath her eyes to wipe away her remaining tears. ‘Much better, but I still want you to stand in the corner and think about what you did.”

Elly slumped and groaned.

“Now, enough of that. Turn around, hands on your head and nose in the corner.”

With a few last sniffs, Elly did as ordered. Her bottom still throbbed with her heartbeat, and nothing was resolved, but after his comforting, she felt immeasurably better.

“Good girl. I won’t be long, but I want you to remain in position until I release you. Nod your agreement, please.”

She gave another nod.

“Perfect. You’re going to have an even larger set of lines to complete today, but this time I’m going to want your sentences to be an apology rather than a promise to do better. So, think what you’d like to say to me while I finish putting our breakfast together.”

 

Though Elly knows her disobedience pushed Jerry into taking action, she hoped the spanking would help clear some of the very uncomfortable tension developing between them and allow them to begin repairing their broken relationship. Instead, it left her feeling more miserable than before.

Jerry said nothing more as he strode out of the room with Muffin in his arms.

Closing her eyes, Elly reviewed the events that got her stuck facing the corner. Okay, maybe she shouldn’t have answered the phone, but it wasn’t as if she’d carried out a lengthy conversation. She barely said five words. Hardly what she viewed as a major infraction even if she wasn’t supposed to talk. Jerry was overreacting, but technically, according to their rules, her disobedience was considered a spankable offense, so he was letting her off easy. Still, she hated doing lines. Being ordered to write line after line of the same promise made her feel like a naughty schoolgirl. And he checked to make sure she followed his instructions exactly. The man could be a real stickler when it came to punishments.

She suspected he was returning when Muffin scurried over and started hopping at Elly’s leg as a signal she wanted up. With her nose stuck in the corner, Elly didn’t have enough lap room for Muffin to jump and land. A lesson they’d both learned the hard way. And not being able to pick up her dog was a punishment in and of itself.
