#SPeekSunday - 5/31/15 - Past Interference - Two guards for a frightend princess #CorbinsBend #Romance

It's Sneak Peek Sunday!  Yay!  And I'm sharing an excerpt from my new spanking novella in the Corbin's Bend series, Past Interferencethe sequel to A Simple Misunderstanding. Past Interference is part of the Corbin's Bend Valentine's Day collection "Love in the Rockies," and is not being sold separately.

What she needed was the opposite of what she wanted.

In this scene, which occurs near the beginning of Chapter Three, Eleanor Benson (Elly) is six days away from getting married again, and her doubts are eating her alive.  After suffering through a bout of stress-related migraines, she's finally gotten up enough courage to tell her husband-to-be that she's not sure she wants to get married.  Jerry knows Elly is nervous, but believed he'd managed to convince her he is nothing at all like her first husband, Arthur, who abused her.  Unfortunately, when he realizes Elly  still thinks he will turn into an abusive monster once they're married, despite all his gentle reassurances, his hurt pride causes him to snap at her in anger before he returns to his vet clinic next door. Elly realizes she's made a serious mistake, but has no idea how to fix things between them, so she decides to go for a walk, hoping the crisp, winter air will help clear her head. As she tromps through the Colorado snow, she recalls the last time her abusive ex-husband attempted to confront her. Jerry and Brent were with her then, and Jerry promptly went into his protective mode, which Brent, as leader of the community and a former police officer, quickly overrode by informing Arthur Benson his wife had filed a restraining order against him.

“You two won’t always be around to play palace guard to her pitiful princess, and I will have my say,” Benson retorted.
“Fine. I’m sure the judge will be delighted to review your case, after you’re dragged back for breaking parole.”
Though Brent spoke softly, the menace in his tone was unmistakable. He might be dressed like a businessman, but his threat carried the weight of a true police officer. Once a cop, always a cop wasn’t only a saying. It was a mantra.
“Good-bye, sweet Eleanor. I shall see you again someday. I promise.” After offering a mock salute, Arthur Benson turned and left. His words might sound innocent enough, but the meaning behind them was not. Jerry and Brent exchanged a meaningful glance that broke when Elly shivered.
At the slight shake of Brent’s head, Jerry drew Elly into his arms. “Okay fine,” he spoke over her head to Brent. “Now’s not the time, but tell me, how was he able to do that? I thought you were having him watched.”
“I was. However, we don’t posts guards at the entrance to the community. He probably parked some distance away and walked back. That was unfortunate, but we won’t let him get to you, Elly,” Brent reassured as he placed a hand on her shoulder. “Arthur can’t bother you anymore. Now come on. Let’s get your things.”

Elly felt surrounded by Jerry's love then, and now she fears she may have ruined the best thing that ever happened to her.

Blurb:

Valentine's Day in Corbin's Bend.  As Elly Benson readies herself for her second wedding, the doubts and misgivings of any new bride-to-be are exacerbated by the abuse she suffered during her first marriage.

Though she's lived with Jerry Douglas for four months now, and been subject to his discipline more than once, Elly's first husband had been kind and careful with her, too, until the day she vowed to love, honor and obey him.  The lessons she's learned from the past make her doubt she can ever find happiness in the future.

  2. Hi Kathryn, intense scene. Arthur sure is a nasty piece of work. Poor Elly. I can understand her being nervous.
