Welcome to MFRW Book Hooks, a regular Wednesday feature! Today, I'm sharing a snippet from my second paranormal romance, Deadly Enchantment, a Victorian paranormal romance concerning the deadly rivalry between two shape-wizard brothers.  The legitimate heir, Terrence, received his father's money and title, but his illegitimate half-brother, Dominic, received all their father's affection and love, earning all of Terrence's resentment.

Published by New Concepts Publishing, the story revolves around a young psychic woman unwittingly drawn into the brotherly conflict when she faces off with the dark wizard of Ravenscroft, whom she is convinced has brutally slaughtered her sister in a fit of jealous rage on their wedding night.

In this segment, Dominic's deepening feelings for Serena make it more likely his evil brother will target her.  Rather than risk losing her for good, Dominic decides to send Serena home directly after the funeral of his sister.  Serena doesn't want to leave, but arguing will gain her nothing but his anger and the likelihood of a more speedy departure, so she remains silent. Though Dominic is suspicious of Serena's new found docility, until she is safely away from him he insists she remain within his reach at all times, which includes sleeping in his bed.  Dominic knows he is endangering Serena's life by keeping her with him, but he is unable to let her go. He desires her while he hates himself for not having more control, even as he greedily samples all she is willing to offer.

Serena wanted to reassure Dominic, but she didn’t know how.  Neither of their gifts allowed them to see into the future, but together, with their powers combined, they were stronger.  She could feel it.  If only she could persuade him of the same.
“You’ll never convince me to willingly risk your life, my love, so don’t even consider it.”
“You read me too easily,” she murmured, not bothering to deny her thoughts.

Torn between his desire to protect the woman he loves, and his need to be with her, Dominic takes and gives back unstintingly, all the while praying he isn't making a fatal mistake.
