SPeekSunday - 1/19/14 - Mortal Illusions - A visit before dying #SPeekSunday #Vampires #Paranormal

For a vampire, love means watching someone you care about die.

Sneak Peek Sunday is a weekly excerpt hop where each author shares six paragraphs from a published work or a WIP (work in progress).

My submission for this week is from my 1st book, Mortal Illusions. A vampire romance published by New Concepts Publishing, Mortal Illusions is currently the first in a series of 3 books.  Its sequel, Fatal Desire, is currently under production.

In this excerpt, which is the beginning of the first chapter, Germaine St. Justine has sensed his former lover's pain and visits her in the hospital in an effort to ease her suffering.  After some gentle teasing combined with a soothing back rub, he gently bites her neck and draws out a few seconds worth of blood, then uses a hypodermic needle to withdraw blood from his arm.  Germaine adamantly refuses to make another vampire, but he doesn't want Marguerite to suffer.  Unfortunately, she wants more than he is willing to give her.

With the press of a finger, Germaine gently tipped her face back.  "I don't think your hair is ugly," he replied, pretending to assess her through critical eyes.  "A bit short, perhaps . . ."
Marguerite laughed, but the sound was hollow and strained.  "It's hideous, and you're a terrible liar, André.  You always were."
He decided not to correct her this time, and when he didn't refute her statement, she asked casually, "So, how's Dracula coming?"
Not wanting to jinx the show, he hesitated briefly before admitting, "The previews have been promising, and opening night is just twenty-four hours away."
"You're pleased with the cast, then?  No problems or concerns?"
Though her question was phrased with polite curiosity, he discerned an unusual note of interest in her words.  Choosing to answer, rather than pose a query of his own, he replied, "I assume the cast is doing fine, since no one has stormed my door down with complaints, but I haven't attended any rehearsals or previews.  I plan to go tomorrow night."

Marguerite knows her former lover won't go against his principles, but she has personal reasons for asking him about the show he's producing.

I love hearing from readers, so thank you for making my day! Writers with any thoughts at all (Naughty or otherwise) love comments, and I'm no exception.
